This course meets Virginia requirements for necessary training of a non-licensed person to administer medications in Mental Health and Mental Retardation (MHMR) Homes and Department of Social Services Children's Homes, according to the Code of Virginia §54.1-3408. Our state certified trainers offer a 32-hour course using the approved curriculum in Medication Management, including the Insulin Module.

Medication Management Parts I & II:

During the first two days of the course students will learn, through both didactic and practical demonstration, proper medication administration and record keeping. The "hands on" practice assignments prepare students for real world application. Our workbook also provides helpful detail, illustrations, and practice examples for each of the task areas.

Attendance at both part I and part II classes are required before a student may attend their first Medication Management Skills Session. Students are also encouraged to study outside of classroom time.

Medication Management Skills Demonstration: The third day of training begins with practice warm up exercises in medication management. Students practice administering medications and keeping appropriate records, under the supervision of a facility trainer. Students then demonstrate competency in each task area, by performing a skills check off demonstration as well as a written test. Students who do not pass all areas may schedule make up skills demonstrations for focused task areas up to three times. Those who do not pass on their fourth attempt will be required to repeat Medication Management Classes Parts I & II.

Insulin Module: The insulin module provides students with the background knowledge needed when caring for individuals with diabetes mellitus. The didactic portion includes basic facts about diabetes, treatment and management options, as well as monitoring for high and low blood sugar. Students will learn how to perform a finger stick blood glucose test, as well as how to draw up and inject insulin. Students will demonstrate competency in these areas using both a skills check off demonstration and a written test. Since the written test is offered at the end of the day, students are encouraged to also read over the insulin module workbook prior to attending this module. This module is required as part of the state curriculum.
