Half of the people in the United States who have diabetes do not realize they have it.  It looms like a ghost in the system.  It can cause slow destruction of the blood vessels, the nerves, and nearly every organ system in the body.  The long term results of the disease develop slowly and are frequently not even noticed.  Additionally, the disease itself is often not discovered for up to seven years after it develops in a person.

 

People with diagnosed diabetes experience the ghost of diabetes as well.   There is currently no cure for diabetes.  Complications will inevitably develop over time in most patients.  Complications are not preventable, but there are steps you can take to slow down their progression.   Blood sugar control is on the top of the list of preventive measures.  This includes a diabetes wise diet and a regular physical exercise routine.  The symptoms of high sugar are easily overlooked, but they allow the ghostly complications to creep in faster.
